Crafting a compelling story requires imagination, discipline and the courage to share your creative vision with the world.
Jelmer, one of our IB2 students, demonstrated all three when he entered the WOW Gstaad Young Writers’ Competition this summer. His adventure story, The Secret of the Burning Mountain, impressed the judges enough to win the July edition in the Adventure category.

Writing competitions place your work alongside submissions from talented young writers across the globe. The process itself – developing characters, building narrative tension, revising until every sentence serves the story – teaches valuable skills that extend beyond creative writing.
Jelmer pursued this opportunity whilst managing his IBDP studies, proving that academic rigour and creative expression can thrive together.
At Haut-Lac, we encourage students to explore their creative potential, whether through writing, visual arts, music or other forms of expression. When students like Jelmer gain recognition on an international stage, it reminds us why fostering creativity matters.
Congratulations, Jelmer. We’re excited to see where your storytelling journey leads next.
