About OurSTUDENT ASSOCIATIONS

At Haut-Lac International Bilingual School, our students listen to us and we listen to them. Whether it be about school life, the environment or political and diplomatic issues, our students get together to plan and run initiatives and events that will help and/or improve our school community and the wider world.

StudentCouncils

Our Primary and Secondary Student Councils provide a dynamic foundation for learning about citizenship and democratic procedures. They enable students to have a voice and to understand that their opinions matter. Our Student Councils have helped improve our school and community in many ways, and have thus become an integral part of the Haut-Lac community.
Student council members are able to grow in confidence as well as learn important, transferable life skills such as public speaking, attentive listening, teamwork, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, moral reasoning and self-esteem.

They may also be asked to greet and show visitors around school, make speeches during assemblies and at school events such as the DP2 graduation, and to represent the school when required.

EnvironmentalCommittee

The Environmental Committee was founded by our secondary students in 2014 to raise awareness of environmental issues throughout the school. The committee meet weekly to plan and carry out eco-friendly initiatives that promote green alternatives such as the flexitarian diet or show their peers how to live with less waste. Meat-free Tuesdays, vegan cookery workshops and cosmetics-making workshops are a few such examples.
The committee members also work successfully with both our school staff and local associations to encourage recycling, eliminate single-use plastic and clean up our environment. It is thanks to them that we now use reusable glassware and compostable crockery at all school events, and take our food waste to a local company to be turned into biofuel or to our “Discovery Garden” to be composted.

ModelUnited nations

Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is an engaging and interactive educational simulation that teaches students about diplomacy, international relations and the United Nations. It enables participants to develop their speaking, debating and writing skills, as well as their critical thinking, teamwork and leadership abilities.
Founded in 2009, the Haut-Lac MUN club has grown to include over 25 members aged 14 to 18. Diploma Programme (DP) students run the club as part of their CAS programme under the supervision of two advisors. They run two sessions per week, one for beginners and one for advanced delegates, during which previously-researched environmental and political topics are debated.
These weekly sessions are designed to prepare our MUN club members for various conferences in Switzerland and abroad, such as MUN Athens, MUN Barcelona and MUN Basel. Our DP students also usually plan their own Haut-Lac MUN conference as part of their CAS project to help less experienced debaters practice their skills in front of a larger audience.
