Welcome to Haut-Lac

At Haut-Lac International Bilingual School, every student learns and lives in two languages – French and English. The exact curriculum and language proportion varies according to each student’s age, their projected stay in the school, and their goals. No matter what age and language proficiency your child is at, our goal is to create an environment that encourages age-appropriate learning, creativity, and personal excellence.

Crèche (18 months to 3 years)

Our team of professional, experienced teachers interacts with young children using a “one person/one language” approach in French and English. Storytelling, crafting, and outside play are used to reinforce language learning, along with other age-appropriate skills. Children are encouraged to progress at their own pace, trying new activities based on their personal interests and readiness.

Infant School (ages 3 to 6)

We begin with an internally-developed approach based on linked learning. All students follow a bilingual curriculum, either with a 50/50 language split or predominantly in English (one French lesson per day). The predominantly English section is beneficial for expatriate children whose stay at Haut-Lac is too short to allow for bilingual immersion. The curriculum addresses social and personal development, early math skills, knowledge and understanding of the world, creativity, and physical development.

Primary School (ages 7 to 11)

Students continue the bilingual curriculum, with a focus on developing age-appropriate skills and competencies. Math, science, art, language, and sports are blended together into a holistic, inspiring, and challenging programme.

Secondary School (ages 12 to 18)

Secondary school students transition into the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. We selected this programme because it is closely aligned with Haut-Lac’s philosophy and values. The curriculum culminates in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which opens up the world of higher education opportunities for your child. The choice of main language determines the course of study for each student. The proportion of French and English is different for each student, and can change over time based on ability, skill, and ultimate goals.

Students from further afield who wish to study the DP Programme at Haut-Lac may now also do so thanks to our recent partnership with Chantemerle, a private international boarding school in Blonay.

A Well-Rounded Experience

At all stages, students grow in a rich and diverse dual-language academic and extra-curricular programme. This helps them integrate the language in a natural environment of study, life, and play.

As students become more proficient in English and French, they may benefit from the option of adding German (upper Primary levels) and Spanish (IB MYP level) to their language combination. In order to support students’ ability to function in a demanding multi-lingual environment, we teach them a structured approach to building personal effectiveness and organisational skills.

As educators and stewards, we model and teach the importance of strong communication skills as a foundation for effective collaboration, problem solving, and global understanding.

We also promote inter-cultural awareness and sensitivity. Our students represent as many as 45 different nationalities, bringing their own traditions, customs, and experiences to co-create a global environment. Families are encouraged to emphasise the fundamental importance of native language and culture, even as their child becomes more proficient and confident in French and English.
